When I first started the 'Daffodil' project, I was going to pick up where I left off with "The Incredible Shrinking Man" - do everything in one take, what you get is what ends up on the album. But as things progressed, the songs lent themselves to bigger things.

Before I laid down a single backing track, there was a completed one-man-band 'Daffodil' album. OK, that's not entirely true. I had a hell of a time getting the rhythm right for "Ev'ry Step, Ev'ry Climb, Ev'ry Rung". So I ended up laying down an acoustic guitar and lagerphone track to play along to. The song really came to life after that.

I've also left the kazoo track on "Wait Until The Ink Is Dry". Full disclosure, it's an overdub. And the "Instrumental Outro" is two banjo tracks overlaid.

Lastly, let's talk about "Honey Gal". HG started as the bonus track included here for the first time. I really struggled to figure it out as a solo piece. And as you can hear, I eventually worked out a version that included an acoustic guitar similar to "Ev'ry Step... " But then I sent Liz Reed a demo of me humming along to a new piece of music I came up with and she had the brilliant idea to rewrite "Honey Gal" to that music. I am absolutely in love with the final version, but I'm happy to share the original with you as a curiosity if nothing else.

Liz has called 'Daffodil' my best work. I don't know. I've produced a lot of music that I'm really proud of. But this is where 'Daffodil' started. I hope you enjoy it.

I bought a second banjo that plunks differently than my first banjo plunks. This is an earthy plunk. A little out of tune and uncontrollable. It’s a good plunk.

I threw away all the songs I had been working on and wrote a new set of tunes around that good plunk. Daffodil Rhymes With Banjo Too is that new set of tunes.

I set down and recorded myself playing all of these songs as solo pieces and shared them with some folks. Liz Reed joined up and we walked through every song, some rewrites, lots of bizarre overdub attempts and shakers that were too loud and I ended up with an album of songs that never could have happened without that collaboration. You couldn’t ask for a better producer than Liz Reed. Her instincts are second to none.

Liz plays a mean piano, Christian Loftus plays a stellar melodica and they both sing better than me.

On January 13th of 2025, the HR lady from my job came into my office, handed me a banker's box, told me to put anything in it that was a personal belonging and follow them out of the building as my employment had been terminated after five years. On January 14th, I got up bright and early and recorded the first song of this project.

'The Incredible Shrinking Man' contains twenty new, original songs. Each track was written and recorded to be performed 'one man band' style, live before a bank of microphones in a single take - using whatever instruments I could play simultaneously live - no effects, no overdubs - just raw, honest music.

Over three weeks, I laid down what I personally believe is one of my best collections of songs, capturing many of the things happening in my life and the world right now, my hopes and my daydreams and my usual short stories of the fictional people I imagine are living out there in our weird wide world.

There's an intimacy here I was a little surprised by when listening back, the mesmerizing clarity of a man alone, every slide of the fingers, every breath between lyrics can be heard clear as day. The performances are not perfect. Some of these tracks are the very first take after the song was written. But that immediacy gives the project an urgency I simply wouldn't be able to repeat with rehearsals.

Warm up a bowl of soup and listen to this thing. It's comfort food for your ears.

In July of 2024, I took my family on a vacation across the country. Coincidentally, we left the same day a certain security software company launched an update that shut down every airlines scheduling system. We were left stranded in the middle of America with nowhere to turn. Somehow we got all of our stuff, rented the only available vehicle we could find (a large red pickup truck) and we DROVE the rest of the way across America.

This album tells the story of our drive, the things we saw, the things we talked about and maybe a few things we imagined along the way.

Go is a big, raw album full of heart and emotion - intended to be listened to from start to finish, but with several songs that stand on their own as new Bill Ludwig classics. Standout tracks include: Go, Red Stitched Upholstery Flower, Yellowstone and Mailbox. But there's no skips here.

This album pairs equally well with a late night drink or a long desert drive. Its music for anytime you need to go.

Having just completed a one hundred song album, it might have seemed Bill Ludwig would take a break from writing and recording. Instead, that marathon exercise of completing a large quantity of songs as efficiently and simply as possible left Bill eager to tackle a more complicated production.

Written and recorded over eight weeks in May and June of 2024, Dinosaur is a full band album - well, a full band where all of its members are Bill Ludwig. Loose in its arrangements with at times heavy electric instruments, others acoustic and intimate all with a wide, multi-layered soundstage, dinosaur is an engaging and ambitious project while maintaining Bills usual twisty lyrics and singular humor.

Dinosaur is an album meant to be listened to as a single entity with a side one/side two - the halves splitting between tracks 6 and 7. There are also references throughout the project back to a greater narrative though even Bill himself hasn't definitively articulated it.

The closing song Homeward was written in the style of Bills dear friend Christian Loftus, who is fond of ending his albums with a sweet waltz. Christian was kind enough to perform on the song - he plays bass and that beautiful organ that fills things in so nicely.

If you have a second, check out Christian Loftus right here on Bandcamp. He writes some great songs.

The three bonus tracks included here are Bandcamp exclusives. They are:

- Dither - First studio takes of acoustic guitar and lead vocal
- Lookie Loo - First studio takes of acoustic guitar and lead vocal(s)
- Homeward demo - The original scratch track (ultimately deleted) over which the final track was built upon

For the ten months between June, 2023 and March, 2024, prolific, award winning and Hall Of Fame inducted singer-songwriter Bill Ludwig spent every moment of his free time writing and recording songs. This effort has now resulted in his most ambitious project to date: 100 Songs.

With a head start of 70 +/- tunes in the archive, Bill wrote another 30 songs and enlisted several friends to appear throughout this epic journey:

- Christian Loftus (Danny Wisdom, Folding Time)
- Dan Thompson (Gone Gone Away)
- Liz Reed (Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder)
- Victor Flores (The Old Bare Maple)
- Jon Tarbox (Skin And Bone And Suede, Fixin To Break)
- Ryan Konopka (Learning How To Breathe Again)

Presented in the order the songs were recorded, 100 Songs is a diverse collection of styles and genres: blues, folk, rock, bluegrass, psychedelic Americana and roots songs are woven throughout this massive collection.

The songs included here represent a full clearing of Bill's unreleased songs, some dating back as far as 2007 with others as new as having been written in March, 2024 - weeks before the album is planned for release.

A 10 CD box set is scheduled for release in May, 2024.

"I've got a confession to make. Songs Of Village Charm isn't the album I wanted to make next. But with 2023 being my towns bicentennial, it was the best time to release a set of Troubadour songs.

No, I really wanted to get out the set of tunes I wrote on the used banjo I picked up over the summer. These songs just flew out of me while writing. And when I got in front of the mic to record them they flowed like rolling water. They just poured out.

The first note for this album was plucked out on January 28th, 2023 (four days after the release of Songs Of Village Charm). On April 9th I finished the mix. Ten weeks. I'm pretty sure that's a record for me.

I'm really excited for you to hear these songs. They're heartfelt, sincere, honest and fun... It's the best of everything I do, as well as I can do it.

I'll also tell you my dear friend Christian Loftus is all over it. He added some lovely instrumentation that really elevates the whole thing."

Besides singing songs to his chickens, singer-songwriter Bill Ludwig has spent the past 5 months of quarantine learning to play the mandolin he bought in September, 2020. Instead of taking lessons or following Youtube videos or something sensible like that, Bill decided to plunk away and write a set of songs.

The resulting album features the first 10 songs wrote on this 'new to him' instrument. The challenge here was to write compelling music with limited ability to play the primary instrument - forcing Bill to rely on strong lyrics, vocal melodies and vocal harmonies.

Recorded in Bill's home studio and entirely self-produced, "Beautiful" is a stripped down and raw album whose creation put Bill's songwriting ability to the test.
